That Which Does Not Exist

by Sue Williams, Founder/Operator, Holly Help Memorial Spay Fund

I have never met you because you do not exist.
I cannot see you because you are not here amongst us.
I cannot feel you because you have no substance.
I cannot hear you because you are light years away.
Nor can I smell you as you have no scent.
And I cannot taste the sweetness of your life for there is no breath inside of you.

Yet still, my heart bursts with love for you even knowing
That I will never see your face or touch your warmth or watch you play.
I will never hold you or smile at your innocence or marvel your wisdom.
But, that is my strategic plan… that you will never exist…

Because I know how easily your warmth can be turned to ice
And your play turned into misery
And that after spending time behind bars for a crime you did not commit
In one instant
Your precious life would be snuffed out like a candle.
Knowing that these odds will weigh heavily against you, I strive daily
To spare you this agony of degradation, this humiliation and total disregard for life
That would have belong to you.

I am left powerless but to extend to you this one gift.
A gift so priceless could never be bruised, or battered,
Or bred for dollars, or bound to a tree and forgotten for days
Or left to starve and thirst…
Because you cannot abuse or neglect that which does not exist!

"Whatever thy take to do with thy hand, do it with all thy might."
And so I pledge with all my honor to work as hard as my love is strong
To make certain that before you come here,
You will be treated with the respect and dignity and compassion that you deserve.
And until such time that you are no longer considered a mere commodity
To discard at whim…

I will toil to insure that you will never exist!
