The Holly Help Fund is excited to announce the birth of our newest program:  Disaster and Emergency Relief For Animal victims (DERAV).

Our mobile disaster support unit, which will pull double duty year round by educating the public regarding disaster preparedness and pet sterilizations, will appear both locally and regionally at various community events. During actual emergencies and disasters the vehicle will act as our Command Center/Temporary Animal Shelter/Animal Evacuation and Transport Unit. This unit will be capable of evacuating 50 to 100 animals per trip, depending on the size and species of animals rescued.

We currently have two response members who are certified through all three of FEMA's Animals in Disasters Independent Study Courses. By successfully recruiting a strong corps of response volunteers, properly trained through FEMA, The American Red Cross, National Humane Response Groups and local emergency managers, we will become a valuable asset to our region, to our state, and to other areas that my be effected by disasters.

Several animal related organizations and agencies, including The Sullivan County Animal Shelter which is the lead animal agency during disasters and emergencies, have ackowledged The Holly Help Fund as one of their support groups in the event of a disaster. It is our goal to contact other emergency managers in our region to make our services available and to coordinate an effective disaster response plan for our area in compliance with the mandatory PETS Act of 2006.

Our mobile unit will also be accompanied by a 12 foot, enclosed, tag-along trailer which will be equipped with administrative supplies, safety equipment, animal rescue and evacuation equipment, cleaning/comfort supplies, and pet distribution supplies such as dog houses, airline crates, leashes, tie-out chains, etc. Perishable items will be procured on an as-needed basis. Additonally, we hope to make this trailer and its contents readily available on a moment's notice for use by Bristol, Virginia and Bristol, Tennessee Animal Control Units, as well as the Washington County, Virginia and Sullivan County, Tennesse Animal Control Units. The trailer will be parked in a centrally located, secure parking area and we will issue all four of the above named lead agencies with their own set of keys in order to implement rapid deployment in the event of an emergency.

Our overall goal is to effect a smooth transition from 'Rescue to Recovery' for pets and their owners during emergencies and disasters. Certainly this is a program we hope to never need, but, should the circumstance present itself, we intend to be prepared.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and The Ad Council have leased billboards throughout our area. The advetisement poses a single question: 'If there's an emergencey, does your community have a plan?'  We would like our answer for that question to be 'Yes".

All donations to help complete this project and to help keep it in a ready state for deployment are warmly welcomed. Please remember that all of the programs we have to offer are only as good as the community that supports them. Man-made or natural disasters can strike anywhere, at any time.
